"Geriatric Pharmacology"
Featured Speaker: Dr. Elliot Hersh

The geriatric dental patient often presents a challenge to the practicing dentist. In addition to requiring complex treatment plans, the older patient often presents with a variety of medical problems requiring the intake of multiple drugs. Side effects and adverse drug interactions often become the norm in these patients. This presentation will focus on the physiologic changes that affect drug response in older individuals and highlight some important drug interactions that are of relevance to the busy clinician.
Dr. Hersh is a Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He also serves as one the University's IRB Chairs. He holds DMD, MS and PhD degrees from UMDNJ. He has won numerous teaching honors including the Basic Science Teaching Award 16 of the last 19 years and the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching, the highest teaching honor bestowed by the University. He has been an invited lecturer to numerous dental and medical organizations. He has more than 100 publications, abstracts and book chapters to his credit and conducts clinical trials in the areas of local anesthesia and pain control. He has been one of the principal investigators in the clinical development of such products as Orudis® KT, Advil® Liquigels, Lodine® -XL, Septocaine® with 1:200,000 epinephrine and most recently Oraverse®, a novel local anesthetic reversal agent. Dr. Hersh was the 2007 recipient of the IADR's Distinguished Scientist Award in Pharmacology, Therapeutic and Toxicology.

President's Message - Dr. Maya Prabhu

In this month's message, I would like to discuss the subject of vicarious traumatization. I was unfamiliar with this terminology until I read a beautifully written article by Deborah Rudacille in the Fall 2010 issue of the Johns Hopkins Magazine. The subject matter was described in context to other health-care professionals but dentists, in my opinion, should not be left out. The emotional toll of dealing with stressful situations on a regular basis may put us also at risk for burnout or compassion fatigue. This would be the "colloquial" definition of vicarious trauma. As dentists, we enjoy the dubious distinction of having one of the highest suicide rates amongst professions but if this is any consolation, a search of Internet sites failed to categorically prove this claim! Be that as it may, how many times have we taken our stresses from work back home and unsuccessfully tried to disengage ourselves so that it does not affect other parts of our lives? It is tough enough to deal with the minutia of our trade where precision is the key, but we also deal with people who come with a host of issues, some beyond the scope of our expertise. According to the author, vicarious traumatization can creep up insidiously and may manifest in little changes with respect to appearance or behavior. The onset of symptoms could begin with a gradual disinterest in the simple pleasures of life that were once considered enjoyable. Ultimately, it could lead to feelings of helplessness and loss of productivity. Obviously, the first step that we could take as professionals is to simply be aware of such an issue and employ self-care strategies. Routinely talking to colleagues or close friends has proved to be invaluable. I discuss cases with my partners regularly, and it gives me a sense of relief to know that the situation was not unique to me and helps me overcome my temporary feelings of inadequacy. A study club is another great forum to give vent to frustrations that are encountered in private practice. I strongly urge younger dentists to join a local study club that has other tangible benefits besides the available CE. To discuss one's vulnerability with a group of peers is a demonstration of strength, rather than a weakness. It shows that you care enough to seek advice. And in this particular case of vicarious trauma, you seek the help of other like-minded individuals to maintain a healthy balance in your professional life. As the author succinctly states, "we face the delicate task of creating enough emotional distance to be effective (with patients) while remaining engaged enough to offer support." See you at the next meeting!

Membership-Tara Savage
NJDA would like to implement a new non-member recruitment campaign in 2011. They have identified eleven past presidents to be involved in the campaign. These individuals have been selected because they are both passionate about organized dentistry (and the NJDA in particular) and very knowledgeable on the benefits and services they provide. This program would involve providing each past president with five non-member names each quarter of 2011, member kits and applications, and a nominal stipend to take the "recruits" out to lunch. Recruiters will be matched with individuals in their geographic area and when possible of similar background (e.g., same dental school).
Peer Review-Sandy Goldstein
There were no peer review cases assigned or mediated last month.
Committee Reports:
Mentor-Amit Vora/Nima MirMadjlessi

Please contact Marlene Glickman, our Executive Secretary, at 732-238-1255 for additional information and registration in advance.
New Business
A subcommittee will be formed to evaluate various aspects of marketing strategy for future courses. Options on making a policy for dental students who wish to attend our general membership meeting were discussed. Cost issues and member loyalty were the main topics of discussion.
After much discussion, Dr. Ira Rosen made a motion that would allow any undergraduate dental students to attend the monthly meetings of the Middlesex County Dental Society at the Pines Manor at a cost that shall be borne by the dental society. This motion will be reviewed annually in conjunction with the MCDS budget and revised as deemed appropriate by the Board of Trustees. The motion was seconded by Dr. Mitch Weiner and passed unanimously. The goal of this motion is to encourage dental students to become involved in organized dentistry.
Good & Welfare
We all expressed our condolences to Dr. Sandy Goldstein on the passing of his father.
Respectfully Submitted,
Nainesh Desai
