President's Message - Dr. Devang Modi

MCDS President

“Spring is Eternal”
70 degree weather is expected this weekend and we are still in February. Unbelievable, but I will take it. Winter was kind to us this year and signs of spring is all around us. With the change of season comes new hope, a new beginning. Many will begin planting seeds which they hope will grow into a beautiful tree, or a flower or a fruit or vegetable. They do it as a hobby, for relaxation, for beauty and fragrance around their home, or for the simple satisfaction of eating something hand grown in their garden. Whatever the reason, the contentment is unique.
Every year, MCDS plants similar seeds in the form of new dentists, dental residents and even dental students. New dentist join our component every month. Its our responsibility to make them feel welcomed and engage them at every meeting until they build enough rapport and confidence to interact with others on their own. One time hospitality is not the answer.
We also graduate 7 talented residents every year from RWJUH and JFK Medical Center GPR program. Every effort should be made to show them the benefits of organized dentistry and belonging to a component in spite of their enormous student debt. Potential job opportunity, mentorship and sharing our experience should be just some of the incentives.
Finally, it was wonderful to see Rutgers School of Dental Medicine students at our meeting once again. They are our future and vital to our profession. Please help me welcome them at every meeting and show these new dentist and other members the Ritz- Carlton service of MCDS. Let’s care, nurture and guide them to become future leaders of MCDS and ambassadors for dentistry. I hope you will join me on March 21, 2017 as Dr. Jon Suzuki will lecture on “Peri-implantitis: Etiologies And Potential Therapies.”

Unfinished Business: Dr. Mark Vitale reported that at the last Board meeting we had agreed to hire an architect to go forward with the evaluation of the NJDA property so that we are better informed to decide whether we should renovate or sell. They will provide this information over the next couple of months and get back to us with a recommendation. We gave them a deposit of $4300.00; the first phase will cost $12,500. The total approved for this venture is up to $35,000.
Membership --Mr. Brendan Breen reported that our market share is up a 1/2 percentage point in membership since 2009.
We have developed a Career Center for posting ads for members and non-members. The target date is February 1st and all will be able to access the postings. We are working with the Boxwood Company. Membership will be sending out a memo to our leaders as well as their office personnel to post on the Career Center.
Programs & Development: Mrs. Maureen Barlow--Annual Session registration is open and the marketing packets have been distributed to the components. We hope the component leaders use all the materials provided to assist in promoting the conference. Currently we still have 10 exhibit spaces available. Sponsorship is selling well. Please make sure your staff is made aware of all that is being offered.
Endorsed Business Partners--Mrs. Barlow will have the final 2016 EBA financial report in March. NJDA’s EBA program is now stabilized. In 2017 we will focus on strategies for each of our endorsed partners starting first with those in need of support from our team. For instance TDIC wishes to get in front of the ASDA group. I will be meeting with TDIC and the ASDA leaders tomorrow evening to discuss a plan of action. Other EBAs that are looking to increase exposure in 2017 are Officite, Merchant Advocate and Horizon.
Governmental & Public Affairs: Mr. James Schulz--Mr. Jim Schulz reported that 2017 will be a very active year politically as all 120 legislative seats are up for reelection as well as an election for the Governor. NJ is one of only a few states nationally to have a Governor’s election this year.
A motion was made to approve the position of the legislature on Senate Bill 2035. An amendment was made to include one hour of continuing education in opiods and their guidelines. A motion was made, seconded and adopted by the Board (Vote #5 BT-17-1-5) to approve the amendment to Senate Legislation No. 2035 to include one hour of CE in the 40 required hours. The amendment was approved with two abstentions. After approval of the amendment, a motion was made, seconded and unanimously adopted by the Board (Vote #6 BT-17-1-6) to approve Senate Legislation No. 2035 as amended and discussed on opioid prescriptions.
Dr. Peter DeSciscio (MI) reported that he is now Assistant Dean for Government Affairs and Liaison to NJDA. He assured the NJDA Board that if any issues should arise where he would be in conflict with his position as Middlesex Trustee, he would recuse himself. Dr DeSciscio reported that Rutgers has opened the New Brunswick site. There will be approximately one (1) dentist per day at the site it is a resource for the local community. The Director of the site has renewed her membership with NJDA. The issue at the Newark campus is basically renovation. The Clinics and labs all need to be updated. They are looking for funding for the renovation. He reported that the sophomore class did well in Part 1 of the National Boards. The Dental School underwent a complete review, the report was positive and both the internal and external review reported that it is a strong school. The Dental school celebrated its 60th Anniversary with a holiday party in December. The University is getting ready to see what the new administration will bring to Health Care delivery systems. RSDM will work with NJDA dealing with any new challenges.
NJDA Council Reports:

We are pleased to have our three gold corporate sponsors coming to our February general membership meeting. Thanks to Biomet 3i, Dentsply Corporation – endodontic and restorative divisions - and Provident Bank for their major support.
