Dr. Dan Pompa

“The Top 10 List For Essential Drugs In The Emergency Kit”

Speaker

After graduating from NYU College of Dentistry in 1978, Dr. Pompa completed a General Practice Residency at Long Island Jewish Hospital, followed by specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Lincoln Hospital, New York Medical College. In 1982, he became a Fellow of The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and in 1992 a Fellow in The International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Dr. Pompa has been a guest lecturer at both Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and NYU College of Dentistry and is now a guest faculty at NYU College of Dentistry
Today there are more medically compromised patients being treated in our offices than ever before. As a result, a more detailed medical history and medical evaluation should be taken prior to beginning treatment.
This seminar will describe the essential drugs needed to create a medical emergency kit for your office. In addition, we will discuss three basic tests that can easily be performed to help in the physical diagnosis of a patients medical status. We will also discuss the “Conversational History” and how this can pick up many medical issues not revealed by the standard health history form. This can be performed by the dentist or staff and can prevent many potential medical emergencies from occurring.

• Identify the most frequently prescribed FDA-approved medications.

• Review the basic mechanism of action, principle therapeutic indications, and potential adverse reactions and drug interactions of these medications. • Discuss the clinical dental considerations of these medications and their potential impact on dental therapy.

President's Message - Dr. Devang Modi

MCDS President

WOW !!! What an amazing way to start of a new educational year. 114 dentist and guests took in an awesome lecture from Dr. John Nosti on “Treating Worn Smiles.” The room was filled to capacity and we had to roll in another table. We introduced our new executive secretary, Stephanie Dowling who did a fantastic job and received many compliments. She was “prepared, polite and pleasant.” It seemed like she had been doing this for a while. We also acknowledged the new dental residents from JFK Medical Center and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Dr. Peter DeSciscio and Dr. Mitchell Weiner gave their NJDA Board of Trustees and informational reports. And finally, none of this would be possible without the support from our corporate sponsors. Dr. Ira Rosen has done an outstanding job securing sponsors for the entire year so that our dues don’t have to be increased. There is great leadership at MCDS and it doesn’t stop there. Dr. Mark Vitale (NJDA President- Elect) and Dr. Mitchell Weiner (NJDA- Secretary) represent us very well at the state level and more.
In the coming months I seek your support. We have many new members who have joined our society and I hope you will take them by the hand and make them feel welcomed. Introduce them to all our members and sponsors. Show them the teamwork, leadership and camaraderie that defines MCDS. My goal as your President this year is to attract new members but more importantly retain ALL existing members. I have made it a personal mission of mine to try and visit every component in New Jersey and bring back valuable information to further strengthen our MCDS. I have many new fun and exciting ideas to make our MCDS meetings even more memorable. Therefore, I invite you to attend every meeting this year. I promise you each one will be better than the last.
On October 18th, we bid “Adieu to Marlene Glickman,” our executive secretary who is retiring after so many wonderful years. The evening will be dedicated to her and a special presentation is planned. A lecture will also be presented by Dr. Dan Pompa on“The Top 10 List For Essential Drugs In The Emergency Kit.” I would really appreciate you arriving early at 6 PM to congratulate Marlene and enjoy all of the festivities. Looking forward to seeing you again.

President’s Report – Dr. Devang Modi
I would like to extend a “thank you” to Dr. Alyssa Bernstein for her service and to the board for their support. Also, a thank you to Dr. Robert Ashmen and to Marlene Glickman for a seamless transition in the hiring of Stephanie Dowling, our new Executive Secretary.
Treasurer’s Report – Dr. Sanjeev Satwah
See full report below.
Educational Coordinator’s Report – Dr. Amit Vora
Dr. John Nosti is confirmed for September 20th, 2016 lecture Treating Worn Smiles.
NJDA Trustee’s Report – Dr. Peter DeSciscio
The Annual Session this year will be able to accommodate the House of Delegates meeting. The HOD meeting is scheduled for Saturday, May 6th, 2017 at 2 PM. The town Hall luncheon will be at 1 PM followed by the HOD meeting as well as bringing the NJDA Leadership to the meeting. Dr. Renee Arace, Chair of the Council on the Annual Session, agreed that the HOD should be part of the Annual Session and reinforced that active communications are going on with RSDM to assure that the students will be involved as well. A motion was made, seconded and approved by the Board Vote 1 (BT-16-8-16) to approve the HOD to the Annual Session. There will be a $25. Registration fee.
Dr.Giorgio DiVincenzo, President of the NJDA, reported that all of our members know or should know the importance of controlling the abuse of opioids. We have started talks with Drug Free New Jersey. A draft of a consent form has been developed and distributed to the Board for its review and comment.
Mr. James Schulz reported that State Legislature is on summer recess; however, the fall agenda is aggressive. Legislation regarding opioids, of which there are currently forty bills, is scheduled for a committee meeting in Senate Health in early September. The NJDA has currently taken a neutral position on a number of those bills. Nonetheless, he is working with Lorraine Sedor on the public affairs element of the opioid issue. It is important to show the public and elected officials that dentistry is making an effort to be on top of this important topic.
Mr. Brendan Breen has stressed the importance of recruiting and retaining new dentists. Historical trends have shown us that we will lose 40% of these individuals as members by their second year of membership. Currently, NJDA’S marketshare of the total dental professional population of New Jersey is approximately 50%.
At the request of Dr. DiVincenzo, we will invite non-member dentists and office managers to the component officer visitations.
ADA Delegate’s Report – Dr. Daniel Krantz
At the recent NJDA Delegates Meeting, our own Dr. Richard Kahn, was nominated to fill the position of the 4th District Trustee, which will become vacant when the tenure of Jeff Cole (Delaware) has finished. Jeff will be running for ADA President Elect next year.
The ADA meeting this year is in Denver, CO from October 20th-24th. The Distinguished speaker is Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Malala Yousafzai.
There will be a full report in November when I return from the Denver ADA meeting.
NJDA Council Reports:
Annual Session – Dr. Nainesh Desai
Our next meeting will be in two weeks.
Dental Benefits – Dr. Devang Modi, Dr. Antoinette Tauk
The Council on Dental Benefits met on 9/7/16. There are two issues that members should make a note of. First, Delta Dental of NJ is trying to eliminate Premier status and roll practices into their PPO network. New associates in your practice can only join the PPO plan, and once they do, your entire practice will then become a PPO practice, not a Premier one. Please check your EOBs and the fee schedule that you are being reimbursed at to ascertain that you are being paid at the correct scheduled rate. Check the plans and inform patients to be aware of any exclusions that may be present in their plan. Secondly, Metlife and Aetna are sending out letters to providers informing that payments will be made as an EFT or Virtual Credit Card (which will incur a fee to the providing dentist). Please contact Joan Monaco at NJDA if you need assistance.
Membership – Dr. Genevieve Fernandes
The Council on Membership was held on 8/15/16 and it was determined that there will be $7,000 allocated for a video project. This includes marketing, training and software. Specifics will be resolved at the next Membership
Council meeting.
A proposal was made by the Membership committee to recruit and retain more full time RSDM faculty members by offering a reduction in dues. The reduction would reduce only the NJDA and Local Components amounts by 50%, not he ADA portion of the dues. After discussion, the Board voted to oppose this proposal (see New Business below).
Instead, the Board recommended that Dr. Fernandes convey to her Committee that we think they should focus on why we are losing members and to emphasize the ROI of membership.
New Dentists – Dr. Sanjeev Satwah
The NDC hosted a “happy hour” on 8/25/16 which was well received and attended. Approximately 25 new dentists were in attendance.
Peer Review – Dr. Sandy Goldstein
Two cases presented and were mediated. There will be a training session in 2017 for dentists that are interested in becoming involved in peer review.
NJDPAC – Dr. Mark Vitale
The state assembly is in recess and things will be busier after the Presidential election
Committee Reports:
Budget and Finance – Dr. Ira Rosen
The budget committee is comprised of our current and past-presidents and treasurers in addition to the chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee. Our bylaws require us to prepare the budget for the October Board of Trustees meeting for board approval and then present it to the membership at the October General Membership meeting. A copy of the budget is then published in the November newsletter and then it is voted upon at our November general meeting.
Tomorrow is the Budget Meeting and Drs. Mark Vitale and Mitchell Weiner have independent votes.
Continuing Education – Dr. Mark Schambra
We have arranged a full day CEU course by Dr. Dennis Tarnow on October 17th, 2017.
Corporate Sponsorship – Dr. Ira Rosen
We have a maximum amount of corporate sponsors this year. There are four gold sponsors: ZimmerBiomet, Dentsply International, Provident Bank, and Techspedient Networks. There are four bronze sponsors: Benco Dental Supply Company, Kuwata Pan Dent, SolutionReach and Acquadent. In addition, AFTCO will continue publishing a monthly ad in our newsletter and we anticipate having Bank of America continuing to sponsor our “Officer’s Night.” We will continue to have raffles at each general meeting for two $50 Visa gift cards to entice members to meet with our sponsors. All members are encouraged to visit the sponsors and see the products that they have to offer and how they can help us and our practices.
Membership Hospitality – Dr. Genevieve Fernandes, Dr. Deborah Brown
Monthly email blasts will resume in September.
Mentor – Dr. Nima Mir-Madjlessi
Our biannual OSHA program that satisfies the OSHA Standard on Occupational Exposure to Blood Borne Pathogens will be held on October 6th, 2016 at St. Peter’s Medical Center in New Brunswick. Two CEU credits will be awarded to dentists and staff members attending this seminar. This is a member only benefit. MCDS would like to extend gratitude to Dr. Joe Fertig, Director of Dental Services at St. Peter’s Medical Center, for arranging our room accommodations.
Dental Shadowing – Stephanie Dowling
Four students contacted the MCDS and will be followed up for placement. We have a list of participating doctors. This is a very rewarding experience for both parties involved. All doctors interested in becoming a mentor please contact me.
Hygiene Study Club – Dr. Alyssa Bernstein
The next Hygiene Study Club course is scheduled for 9/14/16; Marlene Glickman has forwarded all needed information to Stephanie Dowling.
MCDS Study Club – Dr. Nima Mir-Madjlessi, Dr. Genevieve Fernandes
The schedule of lectures is complete and will be made available and on Facebook as well. Our next scheduled presentation is September 21st, 2016 by Minal Sampat—Content and Social Media Marketing for Dentists.
The study club is an exclusive member benefit. Dinner will be served and 2 CEUs will be awarded.
New Business –
A motion was made by Dr. Mitchell Weiner (and properly seconded) to oppose the NJDA Membership Committee’s proposal to offer reduced dues to full time faculty members. The motion passed by unanimous consent.
Good and Welfare -
MCDS would like to welcome the new residents from RWJ: Drs. Lisa Yosevitz, Colleen Trecartin, Chris Fiorentini, Minel Trakhman, and Caroline Tuttle, and the new residents from JFK: Drs. Bansi Patel and Nicole Rocha.
Respectfully Submitted,
Dr. Antoinette Tauk,
Secretary
