Featured Speaker: Dr. Jeffrey Mannheimer
“Overlooked Causative And Perpetuating Factors Relative To Headache, Orofacial And Temporomandibular Pain/Dysfunction Syndromes With Therapeutic Implications”
Dr. Mannheimer received a BS degree in Biology from Bradley University, MA degree and Certificate in Physical Therapy from New York University and a Ph.D in Health Science from Seton Hall University. He has 50 years of clinical experience in the evaluation and treatment of patients with neuro-musculoskeletal pain/dysfunction syndromes. His clinical interests, teaching, publications and specialization over the past 30 years have been strictly limited to the evaluation and treatment of cervical spine disorders, cervicogenic headaches, temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain (CSD, CGH, TMD & OFP) respectively. He is a Certified Cervical and Temporomandibular Therapist (CCTT) by the Physical Therapy Board of Craniofacial and Cervical Therapeutics (PTBCCT) and also Certified in Orofacial Dry Needling (CODN) by Myopain seminars. In addition to private clinical practice, Dr. Mannheimer is currently an Adjunct Clinical Professor in the Department of Regenerative and Rehabilitation Medicine (Program in Physical Therapy) at Columbia University.
Does Your Patient Really Have a Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)?
Based upon my clinical experience of 50 years it is very apparent that physicians, dentists and physical therapists, who treat patients with persistent pain and dysfunction do not take the time to perform a thorough evaluation and consider causative and/or perpetuating factors that may have been overlooked in the acute stage, which lead to chronicity. It is critical for the medical professional to take the time to obtain a chronological history, ask what has not been questioned and examine what has not been observed, palpated, mobilized, provoked or properly imaged. In order to highlight these factors this presentation will provide an overview of the knowledge and clinical expertise required to understand the anatomy and pathophysiology of the sub-occipital spine, cranium and temporomandibular complex in regards to cervical spine disorders (CSD), cervicogenic headaches (CGH) orofacial pain (OFP) and temporomandibular disorders (TMD), which commonly present as an intertwined complex. Various etiological factors and associated symptomatology will be analyzed with emphasis placed upon the performance of a comprehensive evaluation and initiation of definitive therapeutic paradigms, highlighted by a few case examples. The therapeutic outcome in this complex field is often enhanced by a professional relationship between the dentist and a knowledgeable physical therapist.
Attendance: Drs. Devang Modi, Sanjeev Satwah, Antoinette Tauk, Constantine Simos, Nima Mir-Madjlessi, Peter DeSciscio and Stephanie Dowling.

NJDA Council Reports:
Annual Session – Dr. Nainesh Desai
The 2017 Garden State Dental Conference and Expo will be held at the Newark Marriott from 5/5-5/6/17. The meeting will be a full day event on Friday and 8AM-2PM on Saturday. Parking for this event will be complimentary courtesy of NJDA’s endorsed business associate, Bank of America. Most premium booths have been sold and a complete sell out is expected by 12/1/16. Registration will be open on 1/1/17. The main speakers for the event are Dr. Steven Chu and Dr. Charles Blair. Dr. Chu will be presenting on two different topics on Friday and Dr. Charles Blair will be discussing coding errors. Many other topics related to clinical dentistry and business will be presented. For dental students, an ADA success program titled “Finding a Job Program for Dental Students” will be held on Friday evening. Multiple free hour long CE courses will be available throughout the day by new and emergent speakers. The meeting of the House of Delegates has been moved back to the annual session and will be held on Saturday from 2-4 PM. The council voted and approved, Oz Pearlman, an entertainer/illusionist for a two hour event on Friday night. There will be more details coming soon. This year we are partnering with NJ’s Oral Health Coalition on 5/5 from 8:30-12PM ($75 charge for this event). This is likely to significantly improve the registration and attendance for the meeting. There is a possibility that in 2018 we will have the conference back at the shore. There was discussion about a potential site, the Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel in Asbury Park, NJ. A few council and board members will visit the site along with the staff of the NJDA to determine if it is a viable location. The next council meeting will be on 11/17/16.
Dental Benefits – Dr. Devang Modi, Dr. Antoinette Tauk
The council met on 9/7/16. Delta has new coordination of benefit guidelines. There are limits on root canals and policy provisions. Carriers are not covering post and cores unless a crown is also provided. The carriers are trying to dictate treatment. We recommend members negotiate with carriers and adjust fees for Premier coverage. Members need to document necessity of treatment rendered. MetLife effective date of 9/15/16 to comply with EFT (Electronic Fund Transfer). Aetna’s date is 10/1/16. Letters to members did not offer another option but to apply for EFT. This is cost effective for the insurance company but members can continue to be paid by check if they do not register. Aetna’s disagreement with the “Law of Restitution” is such that if members do not participate with Aetna, they are not obligated to return the overpayment. The NJDA is filing suit against Aetna. Complaints about United Concordia regarding the processing of periapical radiographs should go the DOBI. United Concordia is not upholding their part of the contract whether the dentist is participating or not. The next council meeting is scheduled for 11/9/16.
Membership –Dr. Nima Mir-Madjlessi and Dr. Genevieve Fernandes
A meeting was held on 9/26/16. NJDA needs the components to develop a protocol for handling waivers – NJDA feels that the components should make these decisions. The full time faculty member 50% reduction in NJDA and Component dues only was tabled due to poor attendance. The components need to develop their own new member protocol. The council wants to focus on increasing retention rate for first year out of dental school/residency program members. The council also decided to propose to the NJDA Board of Trustees that all members who have a faculty position in any capacity be recognized by the NJDA and get access to the Monday morning email blasts. This proposal passed. Mr. Breen updated the Council on adding videos to our website. He requested a budget of $5,000 for 2017 which will include software, staff training and consulting fees. A lunch and learn for faculty is being planned for October. Mr. Jim Schultz is also scheduling a lunch to speak with the students on governmental issues. The council discussed inviting a full time faculty member to join the Council. Mr. Breen will email the Dean to ask for her recommendation. New Business: Retention Phone Calls-the Council was provided with updated 2016 non-renew lists. Staff will continuously provide the Council with updated lists. Standard Process/Best Practices for components when dealing with new members or interested non-members-NJDA staff will send components guidelines on how to communicate with new members and non-members. Goal to increase retention rate for first year out of dental school/residency program members- Mr. Breen discussed this group which contains 131 dentists. The council was asked to bring back ideas on how to retain these members. Staff members will send each component their list of names. Also discussed was to send this group their 2017 invoices with a payment plan breakdown printed on the invoice. Career Resources-Mr. Breen discussed partnering with Boxwood, a career solutions company, to create a new Employment Program for our members. He will get more information and discuss this at the next meeting. The next Council meeting is scheduled for 11/14/16.
New Dentists – Dr. Sanjeev Satwah
The national New Dentist Conference will be held from 10/20-10/22/16 in Denver in conjunction with the ADA meeting. Dr. Satwah will be in attending the meeting and representing the NJDA as the committee chair.
Peer Review – Dr. Sandy Goldstein
No new cases assigned nor mediated last month.
Committee Reports:

A Message from Marlene Glickman, our former Executive Secretary
I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who was involved in arranging the special night when I was honored at the October General Meeting for serving as your MCDS Executive Secretary for the past fifteen years. You all made me feel so special and I will keep those memories with me forever. I will miss working with the dedicated executive board and I will also miss seeing all you who attended the general meetings throughout the years. I know that MCDS will continue to thrive because of all of the dentists who work so hard to keep the membership informed through educational courses, meetings and clubs year after year. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Please see the poem that I read at the General Meeting below.
All the best,
Marlene
MCDS Executive Secretary
I am a poet, a painter and a teacher, but I never thought I would be,
The Executive Secretary for Middlesex County Dental Society.
I have served in this position for the past 15 years and so,
Upon my retirement I’d like to share some thoughts before I go.
It all started back in the year 2000 under the leadership of Dr. Bloom,
Taking notes at our executive meeting in the NJDA board room.
Each year there was a new president who appeared on the scene,
Drs. DeSciscio, Huberman, Villa, Weiner, Lawson, Silverstein, Courey, Vitale,
Galkin, Prabhu, Ashmen, Stein, Desai, and Bernstein.
My position grew from taking notes to many other responsibilities,
I worked with many people to accomplish all of these.
The third Tuesday of most months were meetings I would attend,
With sign-in sheets and CE forms, which were given out at the end.
I ordered name badges that were worn at meetings on Tuesday night,
Created raffle cards to be stamped by the vendors with a $50 Visa card in site.
I sat through many bloody videos trying to enjoy my meal,
I guess to all the dentists there, these videos were no big deal!
I collected registrations for all of the courses and attended them, too,
Attending early morning meetings was not my favorite thing to do.
The Hygiene Study Club and the MCDS Study Club I helped facilitate,
The many special clubs that MCDS provides are really great.
There’s the Dental Shadowing Program, where Rutgers students can see,
After shadowing a dentist, will they pursue a career in dentistry?
Thanks to all of the wonderful dentists who lend a hand,
For they enable these interested students to observe and understand.
I have enjoyed serving as your Executive Secretary for MCDS,
And I know that under the leadership of Dr. Modi, this component
will continue to achieve great success.
I admire your dedication and commitment to your chosen career,
And I wish you all good health, wealth and prosperity year after year!
