He lectures on numerous subjects and oversees students in various clinical settings. Dr. Hughes has lectured extensively and has authored numerous scientific publications, including chapters in three textbooks. He was the recipient of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s Educational Foundation Research Award and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. He is a member of the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
All dentists will benefit from the confidence and knowledge of how to treat the child patient. This course reviews the fundamentals of pediatric dental practice, including behavior management, pulp therapy for primary teeth, and prevention of dental caries in children. Participants will also hear an update on early childhood caries (ECC) and its prevention.
Well, the groundhog did see his shadow, so we should almost be out of the winter. By the way, the officer’s night and life member’s meeting has been rescheduled to May 13th. Please mark your calendars.
Dr. Maxine Feinberg, the President Elect for the ADA had a President Elect conference from January 26-28th where she focused on the Power of Three theme. “It starts with the Power of Three partnerships—national, state and local, collaborating together, strengthening together and pooling our resources and services.” I could not agree more with this philosophy. I also know, that being involved with Middlesex County Dental Society and the NJDA for the last 10 years, I have seen tremendous effort being placed on collaboration between state and local societies. It is also nice to see Dr. Maxine Feinberg with so much energy and enthusiasm.
I have already made plans to attend the NJDA annual convention at the Revel Resort and Casino in Atlantic City in June. A lot of planning has gone into this event and the continuing education line up is World Class and the exhibit floor with the vendors and sponsors will also have a lot to offer. Please, I encourage everyone to take the time to attend and enjoy the summer like atmosphere.
A number of great lectures are planned for the MCDS meetings for the rest of this year. Our educational committee has already begun organizing lectures for the upcoming year. Listening to some of the names both locally and nationally, I can tell that we are in for another great year.
I would like to take this time to thank Dr. Ira Rosen for doing a wonderful job organizing corporate sponsorship for this year and everyone else who has helped with this effort. I also would like to mention to the members that at the meetings, please visit the vendors and when possible, bring a list of items to order form them. The sponsors have been a key part in helping us to organize high quality continuing education events. If the vendors feel appreciated at the meetings by talking to the doctors and taking orders, they will likely continue sponsoring our society in the future. Once again, “Thank You” Dr. Rosen and “Thank You” to our vendors for this year.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the upcoming meetings and enjoy the rest of winter.
Attendance: Drs. Stein, Kahn, Tauk, Vora, Ashmen, Fernandes, Satwah, Silverstein, Desai, Prabhu, Marantz, Mir-Madjlessi, Schambra, Rosen, Weiner, Simos, Bernstein, Modi, and Marlene Glickman.
Acceptance of 1/14/14 Minutes- vote unanimous.
President’s Report-David Stein

Educational Coordinator’s Report-Genevieve Fernandes
Dr. Eric Weiss will speak on the topic of “Soft Tissue Augmentation, Restorative and Orthodontic Consideration” at the 2/18/14 meeting.
NJDA Trustee’s Report-Mitch Weiner
-Meeting took place on 1/22/14.
-The Oral Health Coalition Summit will be held this year on Feb. 26th at the Rutgers Dental Education Conference Center in Newark. The ACA will be a primary focus of the conference. The NJDA BOT approved a $2500 sponsorship of this event.
-The Dental Lifeline Network (formerly Donated Dental Services) made a request, due to a decrease in funding, to add a line item for a voluntary contribution to the NJDA annual dues statement. This request was tabled until the next NJDA BOT meeting.
-The Christie ‘Bridgegate’ scandal will likely lead to a more complicated legislative session as a less collaborative environment exists now that many prominent democratic state legislators have come out against Governor Christie. In this atmosphere, a good piece of legislation can be vetoed by the governor or not pass through the state senate or assembly simply due to politics. As a result, the bar has been raised higher for NJDA governmental affairs in its quest to move a non-covered service bill forward in this legislative session.
-The Council on Nominations Meeting was canceled due to there being only one nomination for 2014-15 NJDA Secretary. Alan Rothstein, a Denville periodontist, is running unopposed for NJDA Secretary for the 2014-15 term.
-Arthur Meisel reported that Oral Arguments for the Overpayment Recovery lawsuit in the Appellate Division will be given on March 3rd.
-A meeting between NJDA representatives and the Division of Consumer Affairs is in the process of being set up to discuss several topics. Of primary focus will be legislation NJDA plans to move forward to expunge certain disciplinary actions (mostly advertizing violations).

Only 25% of all NJDA members are contributing to PAC. 70% of all NJDA members are 51 years of age and older. 25% 61 and older, 7% are over the age of 70 years. Clearly, there is a demand for younger dentist participation.
