Dr. Lederman is a diplomate of both the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and the American Board of Oral Medicine. He is Director of a biopsy service, Atlantic Oral & Maxillofacial Pathology, and conducts an Oral Medicine consultation practice both located in Freehold, NJ. Dr. Lederman is a member of the Governor’s Task Force on Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment of Cancer in NJ and chairs the Workgroup on Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancer. He also co-chairs the Oral Cancer Task Force for the American Academy of Oral Medicine. He is a consultant at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Jersey Shore University Medical Center and is on the faculty of Seton Hall School of Graduate Medicine. He is a past-president of the American Academy of Oral Medicine and the Monmouth-Ocean County Dental Society.
This program will discuss a simplified, rational approach to differential diagnosis of questionable oral lesions and the early detection of oral cancer and potentially malignant oral conditions.
Upon completion participants will better understand: • How to approach an unfamiliar oral lesion? • What to do when a lesion does not respond to treatment as expected?• What a “potentially malignant” oral lesion or condition is?
• How to triage potentially malignant lesions for appropriate care?• What he or she must know about oral cancer.
Welcome Spring, and thank Winter if you happen to speak to him. It is now the second season of our 100th anniversary as a society, and the weather just keeps getting better. It’s the time of year when outdoor activities become our primary focus, and there is a renewal of life. I’ve always been a firm believer in the benefits of hobbies. In a profession as demanding and exhausting as ours, it’s so rejuvenating and rewarding to have an enjoyable activity to retreat to. For those of you that have an outdoor pastime this is one of the best times of the year, so enjoy your time. It also means it’s almost time for the MCDS Annual Staff Night! This year stands to be a hugely fun evening of county western celebration. We’re gearing up for a night of food, dancing, raffle prizes, and much more. Be sure to register early and take advantage of the savings.
We had an unexpected change in our speaker for our March meeting, as Dr. Robert Vanarsdall unfortunately was unable to attend due to illness. We wish Slick a speedy recovery and hopefully have him come speak at a future meeting. However, he was able to secure a replacement in one of his former residents and current faculty member in the Department of Orthodontics at The University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Ryan Tamburrino. Dr. Tamburrino gave a very interesting lecture on palatal expansion and how it relates to different aspects of dentistry. We thank him for coming on such short notice.
This month we look forward to having our recipient of this year’s Sy Symanski Award, Dr. David Lederman, presenting on the topic of keys to early detection and diagnosis of oral cancer. This is a lecture that all of us can certainly benefit from, and Dr. Lederman had always been a much-liked and well-received speaker.
We are also but a few months from the NJDA Garden State Dental Conference and Expo. This year’s featured speaker is well-known practice management consultant, Linda Miles. There will also be a high tech demo center displaying the latest and greatest technological advances. There is also a 100 year anniversary reception for the MCDS centennial taking place on Friday night at 10 pm following the beach barbecue. I encourage everyone to attend to continue to celebrate our 100 years of success and commitment to leadership and professionalism. I look forward to seeing you all at our last lecture for the year this month, staff night, and the Garden State Dental Conference and Expo.

Dr. Robert Vanarsdall will be speaking on the subject of interdisciplinary treatment with special emphasis on Orthodontics and Periodontics at the March 20, 2012 meeting. Next month, Dr. David Lederman will be honored with the Sy Symanski Memorial lecture. Be ready for the “Hoe Down”. This year’s Staff night will be a Cowboy night with fun and entertainment for all. Dr. Modi started discussion about the staff night keeping cost curtailing as the major objective. Marty from Schein will be giving gift cards worth $500 for the night. Sponsorship from Colgate or a local bank like TD or Unity Bank is being sought. Dr. Vitale suggested that to avoid potential conflict with NJDA it would be advisable to contact TD bank first and the board members agreed to that idea.

Saturday meeting in 2013 will have a ‘Showcase of New Jersey talent” with many locally known and speakers.
Give Kids a Smile-Cavan Brunsden
New Jersey received national recognition by The National Advisory Council of GKAS/ADA for its successful 10th year anniversary. More than 30 members attended GKAS at the New Jersey Dental School after our ADA president rang the bell at the opening of the NASDAQ. In addition, Senator Menendez held a press conference introducing a bill to expand pro-bono dental care for the underserved. Since the programs inception, New Jersey has contributed by serving more than 30,000 children and delivering over $6 million in free oral healthcare. This year, we hosted 112 locations, with 3,099 volunteers, and served 4,602 children. A total of $1,210,464 of services was delivered to these children. Once again Middlesex stood out as a very strong supporter of this effort by hosting 10 sites. Please look for the GKAS booth at the 2012 Garden State Dental Expo and sign up as a volunteer and you will be eligible to win a weekend during the 2013 session.

Committee Reports:
Corporate Sponsorship-David Stein
Dr. Kahn mentioned that we need to let corporate sponsors have some face-time in front of the members and make amendments to our protocol. Dr. Vitale proposed making a small committee to make new set of protocols for sponsors and to meet their demands. Dr. Kahn suggested that we should ask our sponsors to give suggestions about what they would like. Dr. Rosen suggested that instead of forming a committee, we just need to make changes to our original set of protocols. Dr. MirMadjelessi expressed his concern about time issue during the CE or the General membership event. Dr. Glickman brought the issue about possibly reducing the price tag of sponsorship and to have some sponsorship at mentor programs. Dr. Stein brought the idea of partners program or endorsed program and said we can give 10-15% discount to our sponsor, if they are/have decided to become a partner at NJDA. Dr. Vitale mentioned that Marty does not have anyone approaching him yet about sponsorship for next year. Dr. Rosen proposed that we approach him for Gold sponsorship. Dr Stein proposed that we have Marty take a gold package plus six meetings and bring vendors regularly. A committee was setup with Drs. Stein, Vitale, Kahn, Rosen and Ashmen. Dr. Kahn suggested that Eric should be invited at the first meeting.

Oral Cancer Screening-Constantine Simos
The next oral cancer screening will be on April 17th at the Middlesex County Community College hygiene program from 9-1 pm.
Budget-Ira Rosen
If we can get sponsorship for both centennial and staff night events, we will be all set with the budget and can be better than revenue neutral. We may be able to support the bar and keep an open bar even after the cocktail hour. Dr. Villa proposed that we should get more options to manage the bar and have more bartenders

Dr. Rosen proposed adding this to MCDS study club while Dr Kahn brought up something like a case conference. Dr. Vora brought about tying up with mentor course. Marlene said that similar things are done with dental shadowing. There was discussion about having NJDA staff and gearing it towards new dentists
