"New Diagnostic, Surgical, and Prosthodontic Paradigms to Optimize
Implant Reconstruction through Innovations in Technology"
Featured Speaker: Dr. Scott D. Ganz
It has been stated that the "goal of implant dentistry is not the implant, it is the tooth that we replace…" Achieving successful implant reconstruction is therefore dependent on many factors. This presentation will demonstrate how new paradigms in pre-surgical planning can aid in the assessment of the soft tissue housing necessary for proper emergence profiles, determination of interproximal height of bone understand abutment considerations, assessing embrasures, occlusal considerations, temporization, and how they affect the ultimate esthetic result through various case illustrations.
Dr. Scott D. Ganz graduated from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed a three-year specialty program in Maxillofacial Prosthetics at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. Ganz is well- published in various scientific journals and he has delivered presentations both nationally and internationally. He currently serves as Assistant Editor for the peer-reviewed journal, Implant Dentistry and the editorial staff of Practical Procedures and Esthetic Dentistry. Dr. Ganz is on the staff of Hackensack University Medical Center, and on faculty at UMDNJ. He is a Past President of the N.J. Section of the American College of Prosthodontists and the current President of the Computer Aided Implantology Academy (CAI Academy). He maintains a private practice in New Jersey.
When I sat down to pen this message I thought back to the day that I attended my first county meeting sixteen years ago. Back then it seemed like a roomful of male faces with only a handful of women. Gradually the demographics of our dental society changed. We began to see an infusion of young dentists from diverse ethnic backgrounds with equal representation of both sexes. This transformation, I believe, is today's face of dentistry. I would like to take this opportunity to impress upon our new members the value of serving in leadership positions within our society. For some, assuming a leadership role can be a daunting prospect. I know this because I felt exactly the same way when I was asked to join the ranks five years ago. The fear of the unknown brought with it the reluctance to change, and although I didn't know it at the time, taking an active part in the society was the first step that I took towards my own personal growth. This society has an exceptional group of volunteers that serve on the Board of Trustees. I have sat at these meetings and marveled at the wealth of accumulated knowledge and experience they possess. As younger members become more involved and join this Board, they are gradually mentored into their roles. But this learning process isn't just a one-way street. New members bring with them unique perspectives and expertise that help to create a dynamic reciprocal learning experience for all. This allows for new thoughts and ideas to take form. In the past I would often wonder why former presidents continued to attend Board meetings until I realized that their participation stemmed from an inherent desire to serve a profession that gives back so generously. I now begin my journey as President with confidence, knowing that I can count on this formidable 'think-tank' to help me deal the right hand. At this time, I would like to invite any member to come forward and make time to be with us on the second Tuesday night of the month at NJDA headquarters. I can assure you that it will be the start of a magnificent process of personal and professional enrichment. The setting couldn't be more conducive!

President's Report-Scott Galkin
I would like to thank everyone for a great year. Without the help of this board, I would not have been nearly as successful. The volunteer work of the MCDS board of Trustees goes somewhat unnoticed, but is what makes our society the best in the state. Thank you again!

NJDA Council Reports:
Dental Education-Bob Ashmen
The Council on Dental Education hosted a meeting bringing together the heads of all CODA-accredited dental assisting programs in NJ and some NJ high school career/guidance counselors. All attendees were very appreciative to the NJDA for creating and hosting the event. Issues discussed included the demand by the dental profession for qualified dental assistants, raising awareness amongst appropriate high school student candidates of this career opportunity, and the need for our profession to heighten the public image and perception of the career of dental assisting. Also recognized was the need to build relationships between NJDA and NJDAA local societies to support one another's missions. At the end of the meeting it was decided to have this meeting at least annually.
Governmental and Public Affairs-Mitch Weiner
Our next meeting is a joint meeting with PAC down in Trenton at the State House slated for late this month.
Membership-Tara Savage
The Council on Membership met on April 22, 2010.
Tricia DeCotiis gave a year-to-date report. NJDA has 4,329 members as of April 22, 2010. This is just slightly behind from last year at this time. There have been 73 dues waivers so far this year. This is more than in previous years at this time. In 2008 there were a total of 78 dues waivers for the entire year, and in 2009 there were 87.
NJDA will run the trial membership program for the second year. The program was very successful in 2009. Approximately 25% of 41 trial members in 2009 have officially joined the New Jersey Dental Association. Last year's trial members that did not join will not be permitted to participate in the trial membership program again. Approximately 28 people have signed up for the trial membership program for 2010.
As part of the NJDA's marketing collaborative project with the ADA, postcards were mailed to all NJDA members asking members that are interested in volunteering time to indicate their area of interest. NJDA has received 20 responses to the mailing so far.
Tricia DeCotiis proposed starting a "Member Get a Member" recruitment program similar to the one used by the California Dental Association. This program would reward current tripartite members with a $50 credit for each new member they recruit, up to a maximum of $250 per year, to be used towards their dues the following year.
Starting on July 1, new members who join NJDA will pay half-year dues.

NJDA Council on Governmental and Public Affairs Update Summer 2010
Legislation Concerning Supervision of CRNA's: CRNA's are attempting thru legislation to make themselves equivalent to PA's and nurse practitioners so they can work unsupervised from MD's and dentists. OMFS's are opposed to this legislation.
DEP Radiological Inspections: During this inspection visit from now on, the DEP will also be inspecting Amalgam Waste practices (Best Management) as well as the presence of amalgam separators in offices where they are mandated.
Out of Network Update: Push by Christie Administration and Legislature to get more medical/dental practitioners to join networks. In the short term, impact could be felt more by OMFS and other dentists that submit medical insurance claims.
State Budget: The state has NO MONEY! They have discontinued Medicaid Ortho and Adult Medicaid Dental could be on the chopping block going forward. We will most likely see monetary increases in fines, licensing fees, registration fees, etc. due to the budget shortfall.
Oral Cancer Screening Day- to be held in Trenton in September (date TBA)
National Health Care Reform: Under the new reform bill, a 3.5-3.9% tax on 'medical devices' will begin in 2014. The ADA is unclear at this time whether dental appliances will be exempt.
Houston, We Have a Problem
At a recent NJ Dental Political Action Committee Board meeting we received alarming and extremely troubling news that our political action dollars are down more than 50 percent as compared to the same time last year—more than $100,000! What's worse is political action contributions are down nearly 66 percent since two years ago—more than $150,000!
The bottom line is we need you back!
I know the reality out there, the economy stinks! And, I know what you are thinking, "our waiting rooms are slow, collections are down and the political action dollars are "optional". Also, dentistry is doing pretty well right now, all things considered, in the legislative and regulatory arena, so they don't need me." The fact is we need you more than ever. Most political action committees are down both here in New Jersey and around the nation. The problem is that this is a perfect time for corporate interests and large grassroots organizations—corporations like the insurance industry and organizations like the Environmental Federation—to exert influence over politicians with threats of swaying large voter blocks.
The truth is our apathy is breeding an environment that may lead to a sea-change in the way we practice dentistry and oral health is delivered. The power to set our own fees; determine a treatment course for our patients; decide which insurance to accept – if any at all – and what patients to see are in jeopardy.
So, how do we ensure this does not happen? The answer is simple, by maintaining membership in NJDA and by contributing to the NJ Political Action Committee. These are investments in protecting our profession, our bottom line and our financial future. NJDPAC has been one of New Jersey's largest political action committees, but this is now in serious jeopardy. Its sole function is to raise funds from dentists and then make contributions to politicians who are interested in listening to what organized dentistry has to say on issues. Without these funds, we lose the strength of our voice.
Remember, NJDPAC does not support a party. It supports a profession, our profession.
A contribution to NJDPAC is just as important as paying our yearly NJDA dues. Yet, last year, only 22 percent of NJDA members contributed to NJ Dental Political Action Committee. We, as a profession, cannot expect to be successful with political apathy like this. As Benjamin Franklin's was famously quoted, "We must all hang together, or assuredly we shall all hang separately."
Please fill out the included form and make a contribution today to protect our profession and its future.
Still not sure about contributing? Call Jim Schulz, executive director of NJDPAC, to learn more. He can be reached at (732) 821-9400 or via email at [email protected].
A Message from NJDA:
Commerce Bank Becomes TD Bank: What This Means to NJDA Members
When Commerce Bank was purchased by TD Bank North the Toronto-based global financial services giant promised not to change a thing, except the name, of the bank has become known as "America's Most Convenient Bank." The relationship that NJDA has built with Commerce as our endorsed banking vendor continues through the acquisition by TD Bank North and we have not seen a single change in the customer service or banking services.
However, it is clear that many NJDA members do not know that the same agreement the Association had with Commerce Bank continues with TD Bank. This agreement allows for a royalty to be given to NJDA based on the number of accounts held by NJDA members (personal and business checking, savings and CDs). To date, we are about a dozen members short of receiving our first royalty payment. And, there isn't much to do if you are a member. All you have to do is call your local branch and tell them you a member of the NJDA and would like your account(s) counted as one in the affinity program, or let them know the next time you visit the branch. Nothing will change with your account(s). If you are just opening an account with TD Bank, simply tell them the same thing.
Royalty payments from endorsed programs, known as non-dues revenue, allow NJDA to keep its dues stable and offer more services to the membership. So please make sure you link your account(s) to the NJDA affinity program at TD Bank.
