NJDA Officers Meeting and
New Life Membership Presentations

Come hear the stories behind the legislative and legal battles won on your behalf by NJDA this year from the dedicated officers. This annual event is an opportunity to meet the NJDA Directors and General Counsel and to witness first hand their dedication to our members. You will never ask the question, "What is organized dentistry doing for me?" after this evening. It will provide you with the opportunity to learn how to use NJDA's vast resources to get the most of your membership.
In addition, a special presentation to our deserving New Life Members will be featured. Life Members have been members for 30 consecutive years, or 40 years total. Tonight we honor our members who have reached this milestone in their careers, and acknowledge their contributions.

President's Message - Dr. Robert Ashmen

Greetings to all, and a very happy new year! I hope everyone has enjoyed a wonderful holiday season, and I wish you all a prosperous and healthy year to come. This is a particularly exciting year as we look forward to a monumental occasion. This year, 2012, is the 100th anniversary of the Middlesex County Dental Society, and I congratulate all of you as members of this great society. Your membership and commitment to MCDS is a testament to the longevity, success, and impact of MCDS for what is now 100 years. We are excited and looking forward to honoring and celebrating this momentous occasion, as the significance of this milestone is tremendous. We should all be proud, and we should remember and recognize all of the past leaders who have ensured the ongoing established presence and evolution of our fantastic organization. Thank you to all past and present members who volunteer their time and energy to keep MCDS moving forward.
As tradition holds, the first month of this centennial year is the NJDA officer's night meeting. This is an important evening, as we will be updated by our NJDA leaders such as Executive Director, Art Meisel, and our NJDPAC and Governmental Affairs Director, Jim Schulz, on the important issues our profession faces currently and on the horizon. This critical information allows our local component to prepare and organize to face challenges and review accomplishments of our association impacting our profession and our practices.  We will also honor our component's recipients of the Life Member award.  How fitting to recognize these colleagues at the first meeting of our centennial year.  I look forward to seeing you all at the Pines Manor for this important meeting to kick off the 100th year of MCDS.
I also want to take a moment to remind all of our membership to take the time to contribute to PAC. As the political landscape changes with new representation in Trenton, we must maintain access and a line of communication with the creators of legislation that will affect our profession and our businesses.  Our state PAC resources are low at a critical time, and we must remember the significance of the investment we make in the future of the dental profession in this state when we contribute. It's our insurance policy for our livelihood, so please contribute as generously as possible. The importance is immeasurable.
So welcome 2012 with optimism and excitement! It's a wonderful time to be a member of MCDS, and we as your representatives on the board are planning for a memorable year.  Let's celebrate with anticipation of a long successful future for MCDS and reflect on a rich history of 100 years of marvelous accomplishment.

The full-day CE presentation with Dr. John Ruel was a success. We had over 80 attendees, and the feedback from our sponsor, Henry Schein, was positive. The centennial celebration will be held in the Fall of 2012. Our local component dues will not increase this year. We will also be looking into holding a half-day CE course this Spring of 2012.

NJDA has 4,565 members as of October 18, 2011. This is down 84 from last year at this time. There have been 79 dues waivers to date. There have been 153 new applications received so far this year.
NJDA will continue the Recruitment Rewards Program which began last year. Members will receive a $50.00 credit toward their next dues for each new member they refer, limited to $250.00 per year. In order to get credit for the referral, the new member must indicate the source of the referral at the bottom of their application. The council decided to eliminate the component competition part of the program since they only received one referral through the program this past year.
Tricia DeCotiis has been working on recruitment at New Jersey Dental School. So far she has met with the first and second year dental students. She has plans to also meet with all of the postgraduate dental students.
NJDA wants to use the annual convention as a recruitment and retention tool. Plans for next year include having a membership kiosk set up to provide attendees with membership materials. The ADA has agreed to attend and man the kiosk offering recruits the benefits of membership.
Last spring NJDA submitted an application for the ADA's Membership Program for Growth. New Jersey was one of the states selected and the ADA awarded the NJDA a $15,000 grant to be used for membership growth. The NJDA membership growth plan will focus on select ethnic/gender groups, in particular Indian and female dentists and members of the Indian Dental Association of North America-NJ (IDANA-NJ) and the American Association of Women Dentists-NJ (AAWD-NJ). The NJDA will be partnering with these societies to offer resources to support their membership needs. NJDA is already in the process of planning three programs that will focus on the women dentists in New Jersey. All female dentists in the state, both members and nonmembers, will be invited. The first program is tentatively scheduled for Friday, January 6, 2012 from 9:30-11:30 am. Three female legislators from NJ will be speaking in an informal roundtable discussion. The second program is tentatively scheduled for March 2, 2012 and will feature a practice management/motivational speaker. The third program will be in April and will be a clinical presentation tied to cancer and oral health. If anyone is interested in helping with these programs they can contact Tricia DeCotiis at NJDA.
Dr. Ethan Glickman gave a presentation to the Council to discuss innovative membership programs such as dentist and hygiene study clubs, mentor programs, arranging speakers and corporate sponsors for component monthly dinner meetings, mentor programs for the UMDNJ dental students, senior citizen programs, and others. Dr. Glickman has offered to be a consultant to any of the components interested in developing these programs.
The next Council on Membership meeting will be held in January 2012 (1/24/12 or 1/31/12).
Membership Hospitality-Genevieve Fernandes
With email blasts great success was achieved by the huge turnout at Dr. Ruel's course. There's better communication with all members of the MCDS on the upcoming events and the benefits of our association. In conjunction with Dr. Govitrikar, and Dr. Silverstein, we have received an amazing response to the Centennial survey. This will indeed support our association in better planning for this great event. By coordinating with new members on status of their outstanding credentials with the association, members will feel more comfortable with being part of our incredible society.
Mentor-Amit Vora/Nima MirMadjlessi
Our bi-annual OSHA program that satisfies the OSHA standard on Occupational Exposure to Blood Borne Pathogens, which is required annually for dentists and staff, was given on November 3, 2010 at St. Peter's Medical Center, New Brunswick. There were 110 attendees. Two CEU credits were awarded to the Dentists & staff members attending these 2-hour seminars. These seminars are available to our members & staff for $25/pp as a member benefit of MCDS.
A very big "Thank You" to Dr. Joe Fertig, Director of Dental Services - St. Peter's Medical Center, for arranging all our room accommodations for the MCDS-OSHA-Mentor programs at St. Peter's Medical Center in New Brunswick.
MCDS Study Club-Tara Savage
The next MCDS study club meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, December 6, 2011 at 6:30 pm. Dr. Richard Kahn will be presenting a lecture titled "Real World Implants." 2 CE credits will be awarded. The meeting will be held at the NJDA headquarters in North Brunswick. The study club is a member benefit available to all MCDS members. There is no fee for the lecture, except that attendees share in the cost of dinner. Please contact Marlene Glickman, our Executive Secretary, at 732-238-1255 for additional information and registration in advance.
Old Business
Discussed all day lecture vs. half day lecture (5 CEU) in the spring, either at St. Peter's or at the Pines. It was suggested the course be on Practice Management.  The half day course seemed to be the preference.
New Business
• Dr. Joel Leizer will give a presentation about Donated Dental Services at the next general meeting on Nov. 15, 2011
• Dr. Modi asked for suggestions for Staff Night
• The Centennial Celebration was discussed
• Dr. Simos announced that Dr. Amit Vora will be the Education Coordinator for 2012-2013.
Respectfully Submitted,
Robert Silverstein, on behalf of Nainesh Desai, Secretary

A Message from the Central NJ component of the American Dental Hygiene Association

I would like to take a moment to remind the members of MCDS of the opportunity and benefits of membership for hygienists in the Central New Jersey component of the American Dental Hygiene Association. With pending legislation and political uncertainty affecting the dental profession, there has never been a more important time to be involved in organized dentistry. It is our mission to maintain the highest quality of care for our patients through continuing education and symbiotic relationships and efforts with all components of organized dentistry. I encourage all of you to educate and remind your hygienists of the benefits of membership in their professional organization, The American Dental Hygiene Association and Central New Jersey Component. Together we can continue to cultivate the evolution of the dental profession. For information on membership in the ADHA Central NJ Component, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] Thank you.
