“Dental Management of Children with Special Healthcare Needs- A New Perspective”
Featured Speaker: Dr. Purnima Hernandez

Dr. Hernandez is a Board Certified pediatric dentist with a practice in Fair Lawn, NJ. She received her education in Pediatric Dentistry at Columbia University College of Dental medicine. She is an attending in the Department of Dentistry at St Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in New Jersey, and a pediatric dentist on their craniofacial team. While she delivers care to all children, her special interests are treating children with special health care needs.
Providing dental treatment to pediatric patients in the office can be a challenging experience. Treating children and adults with cognitive impairments can pose even more of a challenge for all involved -the patient, parent and the provider. There is evidence of a steady rise in this population. Children with developmental disabilities will grow to be adults needing dental care throughout their life. The movement in advocacy is to promote the relocation of individuals with developmental disabilities from segregated settings (such as institutions and group homes) to an integrated setting in local communities. Hence we need to increase capacity in the dental work force and find non-traditional ways to successfully treat the patients in the office for routine dental treatment.
This lecture will discuss some of the challenges that pediatric and adult practices face when dealing with patients with developmental disabilities. It will briefly introduce the practitioner to basics of sensory and behavioral modalities to help treat children with cognitive and behavioral disabilities in their office setting. The lecture will focus on the developmental disability of Autism. It will address the diagnosis, prevalence; challenges faced in the dental office and briefly discuss the dental management.

President's Message - Dr. Scott Galkin

With spring right around the corner, everything seems to change. The days get longer, flowers start to bloom, and the mounds of snow on the side of the road become a distant memory. It also represents a time when people try to do a heavy duty, top to bottom, cleaning of their homes better known as “Spring Cleaning.” “Spring Cleanings” give a great opportunity to organize your home and get rid of things that you are not in need of anymore. They are a way to get rid of the old and bring in the new. When you really think about it, there is no reason why this cannot be done in our dental practices. Now I do not mean to scrub all of your equipment and open all of the windows in your office, once the weather turns. What I do mean is that now is a great time to review your office organization and policies and to see what is working and what is in need of improvement. A sort of “Office Spring Cleaning.” In our profession, we get so bogged down in the clinical aspect of dentistry that sometimes we lose the bigger picture and realize that we are small business owners, employers, and members of the community. With this comes many responsibilities; included in these are responsibilities to our staff, to our patients on a non-clinical level, and to our surrounding community. This all can be a lot for us to manage. Sometimes we get complacent and comfortable doing things “like we always have,” when there might be more efficient ways to handle many of the everyday issues that we face. Also our personal lives might interfere or prevent us from committing the time necessary to make changes to our practices. There is only so much time in the day and there are other things that are important to each of us, in addition to our dental practices. Thus it can take a conscious effort to make changes that could benefit our business and the people that we serve. These changes can also make our lives easier and in turn, the lives of those around us easier. With spring upon us, now is as good a time as any to really take a look at our practices and see where improvements can be made. Like the seasons, things are always changing and it is up to us, as professionals, to keep up with those changes. What time is better than now to make a concerted effort to do so?

With these donations, JFK purchased 2 LED headlights for their 2 residents. Dr. Modi stated that these donations will benefit residents for years to come.
Give Kids a Smile-Cavan Brunsden
This year marked another successful year as a result of the efforts of the 251 dentists, 199 hygienists, and 250 assistants who volunteered their time to treat 4,319 children.
Middlesex County has always been a strong supporter of this effort, but this year the effort was outstanding.
This year, Middlesex was the strongest participating component of the New Jersey Dental Association. In particular, there were 38 dentists, 62 hygienists, and 36 assistants from MCDS who provided 278 fillings, 275 sealants, 19 pulpotomies, and 31 extractions. Many children were treated that otherwise would not have been able to receive care.
We should all be very proud of our profession, our organization, and our commitment to helping those in need.
Once again, the dentists and volunteers of MCDS have proven that they stand up to represent our profession and to leave their mark as an outstanding organization.

Oral Cancer Screening-Arpan Nandra
We need five volunteer dentists for an Oral Cancer screening at Middlesex Community College on Tuesday April 20th 2010 from 8:30am to 1:00pm. The event is being organized by Lynn Tobin, RDH from RWJ Hospital and the MCC Hygiene program. Please contact Marlene Glickman, our Executive Secretary, at 732-238-1255.
Dental Shadowing-Paresh Patel
The Dental Shadowing Program enables Rutgers students to observe in a dental office. There are approximately 42 MCDS member dentists and specialists who participate in this program. These dentists enable students who are interested in a possible dental career to observe for themselves exactly how a dental office operates.
The program has been in place since 2006 and about 40 students have completed the program. The students plan to spend between 20-40 hours of clinical observation in the office to with they are assigned. They are asked to keep a time sheet, which is signed by the supervising dentist and submit an evaluation of the program when they complete their time with the doctor. Their time sheet is submitted to both MCDS and the Health Professions Office at Rutgers and becomes part of their permanent record. The response from both dentists and students is generally very positive and has been able to help the students decide if a dental career is what they want.
We are always looking for dentists who are interested in mentoring students in their office.
If you would like to become a participating dentist in the MCDS Dental Shadowing Program, please contact Marlene Glickman, our Executive Secretary, at 732-238-1255.
New Business
Resolution- Regarding funding of ADA delegates to attend the annual meeting, the board recommends that the 12 delegates be funded 100% and that the alternate delegates are funded at least at 50%. If the component societies choose to do so, they will fund the remaining amount.
Respectfully Submitted,
Constantine Simos, Secretary
